| The Human Brain
tutorial was developed for the Open University, Milton
Keynes. The idea here was to provide a WWW version of
a CD that was created and also to make the training more
adaptive to the user, at the same time avoid the traditional
problems of hypermedia ‚ a user getting lost in the material.
This was achieved by having an underlying concept based
representation of the material being taught. There were
34 concepts to which the multimedia material was tagged.
In addition each concept had a set of diagnostic questions
associated with them. Initially out of the 34 concepts
only a few concepts (that do not have prerequisites) are
enabled. The user is allowed to go through these concepts.
On successfully finishing them, other concepts are enabled. |
Once a concept is selected, the
user is given a diagnostic test on the concept based,
on which the userís understanding of the concept is
modeled. If the model indicates that the user is weak
in the concept he is allowed to go through the teaching
material associated with the concept. If not, he can
proceed and go to the other concepts. The system therefore
allows the user to focus his energies on concepts where
he needs to revise himself. In addition, since the system
is concept based only one segment of the hypermedia
material is accessible to the user at any given time.
This reduces the chance of the user getting lost in
the material.
This system was implemented using CGI, Perl and Java
and runs using standard browsers.
