Introduction
ESN has developed an SNMP Agent that runs on TALP2010. Any optical device that meets the specifications of TALP2010 from Texas Instruments can be managed using this SNMP Agent. This includes TI’s Wireless LAN that uses these devices for utilizing "Line of Sight" optics to transmit data between workstations, hubs and servers.

Situation
The advent of Optical Wireless Networks such as Texas Instruments Optical Wireless Solution (OWS) provides a number of advantages to the user community. However, in order to harness the power of this hardware a user also needs the ability to easily manage the network that has been set up. That’s where ESN® SNMP Agent comes into the picture.

Features
The TALP2010 running the SNMP Agent is controlled by Windows managed server through the Physical connectivity that supports 100 Mbytes/sec transfers of data. Any Server that is running Network Management Software can control this Optical Device. The Optical device allows ease of Installation and is of Low Cost. Simply by plugging-in this optical device into the Host/PC communication through a RS-232 is supported.

The TALP2010 devices running SNMP Agent are provided with a set of registers that provide information about the TALP2010 device and the network related statistics of the device. The Network Management Software can thus track the TALP2010 device connected to a PC in the network. The Network Management Software is also able to manage TALP2010 devices by giving instructions to them. Thus the SNMP Agent allows for the TALP2010 devices to be truly manageable.

The SNMP Agent comes along with a UDP Stack built on top of the NoxOS running on the TALP2010 devices.

Technical Tools

  • Dual-port Ethernet interface module with two 10/100 Mbps IEEE 802.3 Ethernet
  • Integrated RJ-45 Connector
  • UDP Stack
  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
  • Support for 10 Base-T
  • Support for Optical-Wireless Link
  • Supports NMS running on a variety of platforms including Windows and UNIX.

Functionality of the SNMP Agent
TALP2010 device running SNMP Agent is provided with:

  • Set of Objects called a Management Information Base
  • Support SNMP operations like GET, SET, and GETNEXT by the Network Management Software
  • Sends ‘Trap Messages’ to the NMS in case of errors or problems

Sample Scenario
The following diagram illustrates a simple scenario where the SNMP agent is used. The Network Management Software is running on a server. Assuming this software has to obtain information about a device on the network. This software would send out commands to the SNMP Agents running on TALP2010 devices. The respective SNMP agent would then carry out the commands and send back the response. This would allow the NMS software to either manage devices connected to the hub or devices connected to a PC as shown in the figure below.

Conclusion
The ESN® SNMP Agent is a must buy for those using Texas Instruments Optical Wireless LAN or any other LAN using the TALP2010 device.
