ODoT - BI, Reporting and Analytics


Our client needed expert technical services to develop a set of deliverables that included analysis documents, functional specifications, proof of concept (POC), implementation and education. Additional requirements were implemented to accommodate technical capability to deploy and maintain a robust BI capability; collect and determine technical and business requirements of the primary stakeholders (HFO, OPD, and IS) for BI reporting and analytics; transfer critical BI architecture and design knowledge to ODOT staff; produce functional specifications to deploy a BI capability that includes enterprise considerations; and install, configure and optimize the BI design solution using MS SQL 2005 and .NET 2005 to report against at least two ODOT data sources.

Our Solution

ESN took advantage of being a Microsoft Gold Partner by utilizing all the resources provided by Microsoft, allowing our teams to explore beta versions of new technologies such as .NET 2005 and SQL Server 2005. In these technologies, Microsoft integrated reporting services, analysis services and integration services (SSIS) and provided Business Intelligence Development Studio to develop the BI applications in an easier and more cost effective way. Our teams strived to implement a solution leveraging the new and enhanced features of SQL Server 2005 and .NET 2005. The solution included Ad-hoc reports, personalized Web pages and data extraction using SQL Integrated Services. ESN also helped educate ODOT staff on unfamiliar technologies.

Project Management & Methodology

ESN uses a well-defined Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) model, which takes an iterative approach in executing a project. Each build / milestone is scheduled so that obtaining specific requirements related to the revision of project documents, planning, thorough testing and bug fixing are carried out incrementally. One of the team members is signed the role of quality analyst to review and update project documents, organize testing activities and conduct regular code reviews walkthroughs. Designated team members work in tandem with the quality analyst, as members of the testing team, continuously aiming to enhance the quality of the software delivered.
